Health Insurance–I don’t need it, I’m not sick!

July 10th, 2008 by Colleen

Health Insurance is one of the most annoying things people have to deal with–when looking at it for the first time for themselves. When you have a job that offers coverage, you have to figure out what plan (if there’s more than one), whether to add your family, and that’s usually about it.

When looking at in as an individual for the first time, it can really be confusing. That’s where I come in. Consider me your ‘health insurance interpreter.’ And yes you do need it, you need it BEFORE you get sick, not after, because good luck after something happens. It isn’t always that easy; here’s why.

Individual health plans are underwritten, or reviewed, on a one on one basis. It’s not like group insurance through a job where generally you are taken regardless of your health history. When you look at rates, the insurance company figures you’ll be going to a doctor one or twice a year, maybe an antibiotic here and there, that’s figured into the rates. But if you have a health condition already, that requires seeing a doctor and prescriptions, that’s an additional cost to the carrier right off the bat. What happens then is you are either accepted but at an increased rate, which can be a boat load of money, or declined.

So when it comes to health insurance, you need it, even if you’re not sick. Just in case. Even if your not ‘sick,’ what about the crazy driver that plows in to you on the way home? They usually aren’t standing there waiting to give you a blank check to take care of your medical expenses. And oh yeah, one more thing most people don’t know about–the leading cause of home mortgage foreclosures (at least up until this latest sub prime mortgage mess) has been exorbitant medical expenses. So get it now, avoid the hassles later.
